CIC About Classic Sailing Community Interest Company

CIC – Classic Sailing Community Interest Company – Mission Statement

Classic Sailing’s aim is to make traditional sailing more accessible, inclusive and sustainable. At the same time, we support the working vessels, professional crews, maritime skills and communities that make these experiences possible.

The purpose behind our work

Traditional sailing gives people direct access to the sea, practical seamanship and life aboard a working vessel. No previous sailing experience is needed for the vast majority of  voyages.

People learn by taking part, working with others and sharing responsibility onboard our sailing vessels..

These voyages can improve confidence, physical and mental wellbeing, and understanding of the marine environment. They also create a social experience that happens while sailing and living aboard.

The vessels themselves need regular work and reliable income. By helping them find crews and future sailors, Classic Sailing helps keep historic vessels active at sea rather than preserved only as static exhibits.

What we will do

Open traditional sailing to more people

We will explain sailing clearly to newcomers and make it easier for people from different backgrounds to take part. Our plans include a bursary scheme for those who could not otherwise afford a voyage.

Support working traditional vessels

We will provide marketing, booking and practical support to vessel operators. We will also encourage cooperation, shared knowledge and consistent standards across the traditional sailing sector.

Keep maritime skills in use

We will help professional crews pass seamanship, navigation and teamwork skills to new generations. This supports the specialist trades that keep traditional vessels working, including sailmaking, rigging, rope work and shipwright practice.

Share maritime heritage

We will present traditional vessels as working cultural assets. Through active voyages, people can experience working histories, coastal communities and seafaring traditions first hand.

Build understanding of the marine environment

We will use time at sea to develop awareness of marine life, coastal environments and responsible sailing. We will also recognise and promote good environmental practice among the vessels we work with.

How the community benefits

The public gains wider access to practical sailing, shared experience, education and time at sea. Vessel operators gain income, support and a stronger cooperative network. In turn, this helps protect working vessels, specialist skills and maritime knowledge for the future.

How we will use any surplus

Any surplus will be put back into the community. This may include bursaries, outreach, educational activities, better resources for future sailors, and practical support for vessels and their crews.

Accountability

We will report on our community work and listen to participants, vessel operators and maritime partners. Their experience will help us decide what to improve and where our support can have the greatest effect.
