Voyage Description

Be a Part of the #Resolute Expedition

You’ll join Ocean Warrior’s Expedition Ship Linden’ at Longyearbyen in Svalbard, with its fascinating wildlife and statuesque landscapes. Arriving here shortly after the summer solstice, it will be light round the clock. Truly a land of the midnight sun.

Before departure you’ll be fully familiarised with the ship, including undergoing safety training and drills, as well as settling in to life on board and getting to know the rest of the crew.

The first leg of your voyage will take you across the Barents Sea via Bear Island to Tromsø, also known as the Arctic Capital, and home to the most northerly university in the world. From here Ocean Warrior’s Expedition Ship Linden will sail through the stunning Lofoten Islands, with dreamlike night watches in the light of the never-setting sun. Turning inland for a stopover at Harstad and Bodø, you’ll experience the beauty of the Norwegian mainland, with its high-sided fjords and jagged peaks.

Setting out across the North Sea, your next landfall is the Shetland Islands, before sailing the entire East Coast of the UK and up the Thames into London. Sailing into the Capital is a unique experience, and gives the city a completely different perspective.

Here there will be a launch event to celebrate the inaugural voyage of the Resolute Expedition, of which you, the voyage crew, have been an integral part.

Departing London once more, it’s time to head South and then South West, through the busy Dover Strait and into the English Channel, heading for Plymouth, your final destination. Here, Ocean Warrior’s Expedition Ship Linden will be loaded with the scientific equipment she’ll need to continue her Expedition to Resolute Bay, Canada.

This decade long mission will demonstrate that using a traditional sailing vessel equipped with state of the art autonomous scientific instrumentation can address key questions in polar ocean and climate research, including:

Air Sea Carbon Dioxide fluxes: What controls the spatial and temporal variability of oceanic CO2 uptake?

Phytoplankton community dynamics: What determines the distribution patterns of plankton? How and why do plankton communities change in response to short- and long-term, natural and anthropogenic perturbations?

Validation of ocean colour satellites: Are phytoplankton biomass and/or community structure changing at global, basin and regional scales?

Changes in ocean chemistry and physical structure: At what rate is climate change impacting ocean structure (e.g., heat content and stratification) and ocean chemistry (e.g., pH, O2), and what functional changes is this bringing about?

In addition, Ocean Warrior will deliver an open access and FAIR data management architecture that establishes a standards-based data pipeline covering collection, storage, quality control, and delivery to users.

Our goal is to equip a traditional sailing vessel with science, marine autonomy, citizen science and outreach to deliver net zero oceanography in a near real time capacity.

WINDS, WAVES & WEATHER

Although you’ll be joining the ship only 700 miles from the North Pole, it will be Arctic Summer, and the temperatures on Svalbard will be a a relatively balmy 3°C to 7°C. Wind speeds average 6 to 10 knots, although Svalbard is a meeting place for mild southern and cold northern air, often creating low pressures and potentially high wind speeds on occasion.

The weather along coastal Norway can also be changeable, but is at its most settled in the summer months. Your passage across the North Sea to Shetland, and then South down the length of the British Isles, will very likely be a mixed bag. There will be glorious summer days with a fine sailing breeze and relatively flat seas, but you should also expect some choppier days and the infamous British rain to make an appearance. The Dover Strait can be particularly rough at times, as the Atlantic funnels through a tiny gap into the North Sea. The professional crew will time your passage through the Strait based on the most up to date weather forecast in order to avoid poor conditions.

HANDS ON EXPEDITION

The Ocean Warrior voyages are real expeditions, not adventure holidays. These trips will be fascinating, educational and inspiring but something they won’t be is relaxing! You’ll be learning to sail the ship with the professional crew, forming part of a navigational watch, joining in with data collection and citizen science projects and generally being a core member of the team during your time on board.

A NOTE ON VOYAGE DESCRIPTIONS

On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes for the forecast. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described above, but when it comes to sailing, you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.

How to Get There:

Longyearbyen, nestled in the remote archipelago of Svalbard, promises an extraordinary travel experience. Although it is situated far north, there are various ways to reach this Arctic paradise:

– From the UK: To reach Longyearbyen from the UK, the most convenient option is to take a flight. Many airlines offer connecting flights from different UK airports, with Oslo or Tromsø being a common layover. From Oslo, you can catch a domestic flight to Longyearbyen. Consider airlines such as SAS, Norwegian, or Widerøe for available routes.

– From Europe: Similarly, flying is the most practical choice for travellers coming from Europe. Major cities like Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki offer connecting flights to Longyearbyen. Keep in mind that most flights from Europe to Longyearbyen connect through Tromsø in Norway. From Tromsø, you can continue your journey with a domestic flight to Longyearbyen.

– From North America: Travellers from North America can reach Longyearbyen by flying. Look for flights that connect through major European hubs like Oslo or Tromsø. Several airlines, including SAS, Norwegian, and Finnair, operate flights that can take you to Longyearbyen from North America with convenient layovers.

– From Australia: Getting to Longyearbyen from Australia involves multiple connections and considerable travel time. The most common route is to fly from Australia to a major European city, such as London or Frankfurt. From there, connect to Longyearbyen via Oslo or Tromsø. Plan your journey carefully, considering layover times and available flights.

From the airport in Longyearbyen you can either take a taxi or the Flybus to the ship. Both will be available on arrival. Just tell the driver that you want to go to the port. The bus will cost about NOK 100 per person, the taxi about NOK 250 per taxi.

There are several marina docks in Plymouth.

For Pegasus, Johanna Lucretia and Moosk: Please meet at “the Hanger Car Park” in Plymouth Yacht Haven car park, Turnchapel. PL9 9XH (See below for directions – Parking in the marina is free.)

For Grayhound: voyages will start from Mayflower Marina, Richmond Walk. If it is any different you will be informed by the skipper before the day of arrival. She is often the only wooden masted ship in this harbour, so it will be easy to spot her three black masts. Address: Richmond Walk, Plymouth PL1 4LS. – see info below.

Mayflower Marina – for Grayhound

Mayflower Marina is to the west of the city centre, and has some long pontoons so is often used for our larger vessels. It is only about a 10 minute taxi from Plymouth Railway Station. There is secure parking within the marina for a daily parking fee.

MARINA ACCESS & ON SITE CAR PARKING
Vehicular access to the marina is restricted by a car park barrier, there is a card reader / intercom pedestal. If you do not have an access fob please follow the instructions on the intercom pedestal.

Car park charges are two hours free then £1 for 1 hour over the free period, £2 for 2 hours over the free period and then £5 for up to 22 hours after the free period. It is requested that the owners of parked cars leave their keys in the marina office in case the car has to be moved for operational reasons.

Plymouth Yacht Haven /Mountbatten Marina / Turnchapel – for Pegasus, Moosk and Johanna Lucretia

This marina has had several changes of name over the years so you may find skippers referring to it as Turnchapel / Mountbatten Marina – Allow at least 25 minutes to get from A38 Marsh Mills Roundabout Plymouth city centre exit road to Turnchapel by car. It does have FREE long term parking in the marina.

If you are travelling by public transport the most direct route is a 10 minute yellow ferry (foot passengers only) from the Barbican Pub straight to Mountbatten next to Plymouth Yacht Haven. Directions:

Turn left off A38 at Marsh Mills roundabout onto A374 signed Plymouth City Centre.
After 1 1/4 mile get into left hand lane and follow signs for Kingsbridge A379.
This takes you across Laira Bridge where you will see the first signs for Mount Batten and Turnchapel.
After crossing the Laira Bridge, at the first roundabout turn right.
At the next roundabout (mini) take the second exit, cross pedestrian lights, and continue straight on until traffic lights at crossroads.
Turn right and then go straight through a second set of lights.
Keep on this road (for approx 1 1/2 miles) until you come to a roundabout.
Turn right into Plymouth Yacht Haven.

What to pack for an Ocean Warrior Expedition ship Linden

What is Included:

Three meals per day on board

All safety equipment, including lifejackets

Your bunk, a towel and warm bedding

An Ocean Warrior branded Henri Lloyd offshore sailing jacket, yours to keep (worth £750)

What is Not Included:

Travel to and from your voyage, including any accommodation ashore

Personal insurance (to cover cancellation, travel, search & rescue, medical costs and repatriation and personal effects). See our advice on Travel Insurance.

Alcohol. There is a bar on board where drinks and snacks can be purchased. Note that consumption of alcohol is at the strict discretion of the Skipper and is never permitted when watch-keeping.

What to Bring

Ocean Warrior branded kit, including Henri Lloyd sailing waterproofs, is available to participants with a 20% discount through Global Warrior Expedition Basecamp. Contact them to discuss what you need. We'd highly recommend talking to Basecamp to make sure you've got everything to keep you safe, warm and dry during your time on board.

Waterproofs: you will need good wind and water-proof trousers and a jacket. High-chest sailing salopettes are ideal. You will be provided with an offshore sailing jacket.
Warm waterproof boots with good grip (for deck and ashore). Bring a second set, so you'll have something warm and dry if one pair gets wet.
A warm hat (ear flaps are a bonus!), mittens or gloves (waterproof if possible) and a warm tubular snood for round your neck (these are better than a long scarf which can get whipped away in the wind and caught in the lines).
At least two sets of warm clothes - think in layers: For the torso- a warm baselayer (natural wool is great), a mid layer and a warm wool or fleece jumper. For the legs- thermal underwear (silk or wool are both great), a mid layer of leggings or trousers and then your wind and waterproof outer layer.
Several pairs of thick warm socks, plus some slimmer socks so you can double-layer these too.
A small waterproof rucksack for taking ashore with you.
Sunglasses and spectacles. We highly recommend a cord / neck strap for your glasses.
A pair of decent binoculars: having your own pair means you won't miss any wildlife spotting opportunities!
Moisturiser with SPF, including lip balm. Your skin can dry out quickly in cold air, and the sun is surprisingly strong, especially when reflecting from the sea, ice and snow.
Any medication, including seasickness tablets or pressure-point wristbands (talk to your pharmacist and see our article on seasickness)
Your own logbook and / or journal for keeping track of your adventures.
Your camera and other electronics, including chargers and good waterproof cases. Sockets on board are European. Make sure any valuable devices are covered by your travel insurance.

N.B. Please don't use a rigid suitcase or a bag with a rigid frame. Soft bags are much easier to fold up and stow. Also don't bring any expensive jewellery or other valuables, unless you have specific insurance to cover it.

The Oceans have been my life since I was a teenager. I love the awesome beauty, the serenity, the frenetic chaos and the overwhelming power. To think that we as humans have taken advantage of and abused our oceans to the point of serious damage is horrifying. Which is why I was honoured when Jim and Sam asked me to be Patron of their critically important project.

Over the next 11 years, Ocean Warrior will train ordinary people from all walks of life and many nations to benchmark, measure and monitor - 'ground-truth' - exactly what is happening for our partner scientific organisations.

What's more, they will do this by the power of the wind, teaching the participants to sail in the process. This by anyone's standards is an extraordinary endeavour and I'm delighted to help them in any way I can.
