Sail from rugged coast of Mallorca to the capital of Sardinia, with several days of open sea between. This voyage offers a great opportunity to learn the ropes in the spring sunshine of the Mediterranean (or just kick back and relax on a beautiful ship!).

You start your voyage on the Balearic Islands and the historic port of Palma. Known for its impressive cathedral, vibrant old town, and crystal-clear waters, it’s well worth staying here for a few days before your trip if you can.
Stepping aboard the Santa Maria Manuela you’ll be greeted with a tour and safety induction. Then you can settle into your cabin before getting to know your fellow sailors over dinner on board.
Departing Palma, enjoy the beautiful views of Mallorca’s jagged coastline as you start get to grips with life on board. Over five days, the Santa Maria Manuela will navigate the sparkling waters of the western Mediterranean. Whether you choose to immerse yourself in the daily rhythm of sailing or simply enjoy the views and sea breeze, it’s up to you, although we would encourage you to get as involved as possible.

Your crew are a friendly and knowledgeable bunch, and will be happy to ‘show you the ropes’ – literally! Volunteers to hoist and trim the sails speed are always welcome, and the feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is a unique experience! You might also want to climb the mast, or out onto the bowsprit (not at all compulsory, but going ‘aloft’ is, in our opinion, one of the highlights of a tall ship voyage).
Nights at sea are fantastic for stargazing, with no light pollution. It’s well worth standing a night-watch with the professional crew to get a taste of the ocean-going sailor’s life.
The capital of Sardinia is a city framed by hills and coastal lagoons, with a rich history and a bustling marina. It’s a fabulous place to explore, so delay your onward travel if you can and soak it all in!
The old city climbs above the waterfront, so you can look down on the harbour approaches and watch ships arriving. Castello district and the old bastions give excellent vantage points. There’s also a charming maritime museum focused on traditional Sardinian boats and fishing craft. Nearby beaches like Poetto are long and open. Inland, you’ve got salt flats with flamingos, and rugged hills within cycling reach if you fancy hiring a bike.

By mid-March, the western Mediterranean begins to warm up, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 16 to 20°C. There’s still a chance of occasional spring showers, but sunnier days become more frequent. Winds remain generally favourable for sailing, especially in open waters between the Balearics and Sardinia. Evenings can still be cool, so warm layers are recommended.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
The historic capital of the Balearic island of Mallorca, Palma is full of history from the Moorish period and beyond. Don’t miss the iconic La Seu Cathedral, which took a good 300 years to build, and the 10th-century Arab Baths. There are also fantastic hiking opportunities nearby in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
Nestled in a bay on Sardinia’s southern coast, the island’s capital is a beautiful port city with Roman and Phoenician roots. Fantastic medieval architecture, great food and the flamingos at the nearby Molentargius-Saline Natural Park are all worth spending some time over!
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
