Smugglers Cottage, Tolverne

Postcode: TR2 5NG

Smugglers Moorings, Located at Smugglers Cottage, Tolverne is an interesting place to find. It is only 10 minutes drive from St Mawes. Located deep inland, up the sheltered River Fal, the pontoon gives us access by dinghy to some of the most sheltered mid river moorings in South Cornwall.

Pilot Cutter Tallulah uses Smugglers Cottage as an alternative ‘port’ to St Mawes, Cornwall, when her home mooring is too exposed. Now a private house Smugglers cottage was once a Tearoom (now closed) and ferries would bring customers by passenger boat boat to this idyllic waterside spot, surrounded by woodland. During WW2 is was one of the D Day Landing secret venues for the invasion landing craft. There are no facilities here. St Mawes has the nearest shops and toilets.

By Car from St Mawes and the east
Drive North on the A3078 to St Just in Roseland and turn left towards King Harry Ferry. As you drop down through the woods towards the chain ferry there is a private lane on the right, with a sign to Tolverne. Drive about half a mile along a wooded concrete track. When you reach the gate at the end, just park on the right in the lane. You can leave a car here for free, but please don’t drive through the gate as Smugglers Cottage is now a private residence. You can walk through the gate to the pontoon, where Tallulah’s tender will come to collect you.

By car from Falmouth and the west
Come across The King Harry Ferry to the Roseland (St Mawes) side of the river. As you drive 200 metres up the hill from the ferry there is a sharp left hand turn with a sign to Tolverne. This is an old military road through the woods for about 1/2 mile. When you reach the gate at the end, just park on the right in the lane. You can leave a car here for free, but please don’t drive through the gate as Smugglers Cottage is now a private residence. You can walk through the gate to the pontoon, where Tallulah’s tender will come to collect you.

By Public Transport
