Walking the Wild Edges: Sailing to Remote Coasts and Islands
If you enjoy both walking and sailing we have some brilliant voyages for you, offering a truly unique walking holiday.
The fact is by sailing we get you away from the crowds; we don’t return to a resort at the end of the day. We stop in that stunning location, enjoy sunsets and the quiet of an evening. Your home is always there for you to return to after an interesting hike. No need to allow time to get back to your accommodation, no need to carry camping equipment. Your boat is your home, right on hand. Ideal if you enjoy quiet, natural places?
Whether it’s a short stroll from a hidden anchorage or a more challenging climb, traditional boats and tall ships let you access landscapes beyond the reach of roads or resorts. Behind us all you will see is our clean wake. We take care of the sea.
Western Isles of Scotland
Remote, rugged, and full of history, the Western Isles are a natural choice for walkers who sail. Expect anchorages beneath high cliffs, sea lochs, and islands rich with wildlife. Think Lunga for puffins and ruined chapels, Mingulay’s deserted beaches, or Barra’s steep coast paths.
Isles of Scilly
Off the Cornish coast, the Isles of Scilly are a walker’s paradise. Short island hops under sail can take you to Tresco’s Abbey Gardens, to Bryher’s sandy beaches, an awesome seafood restaurant, the Island Fish Ltd, and St Martin’s wild shorelines and friendly Island Bakery. Everything is close, but each island has its own very distinctive character.
Antarctica
In Antarctica, sailing is often the only way to access the continent’s walking opportunities. Most landings are short hikes—but even these few steps put you in landscapes that redefine scale. Walk close to penguin colonies following the rules not to disturb them, up to ice-fringed and snow-capped viewpoints, or along shorelines with Elephant and Antarctic Fur Seals. Keep an eye out for Albatross, petrels, and skuas. A nature lover’s paradise. Get to these incredible locations by tall ship, not a canned cruise ship.

Cape Verde
The volcanic islands of Cape Verde combine tropical seas with dry, dramatic interiors. Anchor near villages and walk into steep valleys or up ancient lava flows. Islands like Santo Antao offer spectacular ridge walks with views back to your ship at anchor.

The Caribbean
Caribbean itineraries are less about the beach bars and more about the walking. Sail to Dominica’s rainforest paths, the waterfalls of Saint Lucia, or explore the high trails of Saint Vincent. In these quieter corners, your vessel becomes your route into the interior.

Why Walking and Sailing Works
A sailing vessel can get you close, but it also waits while you walk. There’s no rush to get back for a ferry. You arrive in harmony with the tides and leave with the wind. No roads, no queues, and no need to retrace your steps. Just pure access to the remote coasts and islands.
If you’re looking for a different kind of walking holiday, one that combines skill, seclusion, and sustainability—this might be it.
