Sailing holidays in Norway

Fjords, islands and coastal communities

Explore Norway aboard a traditional sailing vessel, travelling between island channels, coastal towns and fjords that reach deep into the mountains. A sailing holiday gives you time to watch the landscape change, enjoy life aboard and discover places ashore.

Along the western coast, the journey can lead from open sea into waterways enclosed by steep mountainsides. Waterfalls tumble towards the fjord, while farms and villages occupy narrow strips of land beside the water. Further south, rocky islands shelter harbours lined with white wooden houses.

For couples, friends and solo travellers, Norway offers a rewarding combination of scenery, coastal culture and traditional sailing. You can take an interest in the ship’s working life while enjoying the journey at your own pace. Choose your voyage carefully, as a coastal holiday and an offshore passage offer very different experiences.

Norway Fjord

Explore the Norwegian fjords by sailing ship

Norway’s fjords are arms of the sea extending inland through valleys carved by glaciers. From aboard a sailing vessel, their scale becomes clear. Mountains rise directly above the water, and each bend reveals another view.

Western Norway includes Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Lysefjord and the fjords around Geiranger. These are separate sailing areas, so no single voyage should be expected to cover them all. Instead, look at the proposed route and the time available for exploring.

Hardangerfjord combines mountain scenery with villages, fruit farms and a long relationship with the water. In spring, blossom brightens the orchards along its shores. Elsewhere, narrower fjord branches bring the mountains closer, changing the outlook from deck.

The attraction is not simply reaching a famous viewpoint. It is travelling through the landscape, sharing meals aboard and watching evening light settle across the water.

The captain chooses the route and stopping places to suit conditions. Therefore, named fjords and visits ashore should be treated as planned possibilities unless the voyage description states otherwise.

Southern Norway’s white coast

Southern Norway offers a different setting from the high mountain fjords. Here, low rocky islands, sheltered channels and white painted wooden towns shape the coast.

Towns such as Risør, Grimstad and Lillesand reflect Norway’s seafaring heritage. Narrow streets run between timber houses, while harbours remain central to local life. Meanwhile, the surrounding islands provide a varied setting for coastal sailing.

If your voyage follows this coast, time ashore might mean a harbour walk, a café stop or exploring an old town. It is a good region to consider if coastal communities interest you as much as mountain scenery.

Norway

Wind, waves and weather

Norway’s islands and fjords can provide shelter from ocean swell. As a result, some stretches offer relatively smooth water beneath a dramatic mountain backdrop.

Shelter does not mean constant calm. Mountains can funnel the wind, and gusts may descend from the slopes. Meanwhile, exposed headlands and coastal passages can bring stronger winds and rougher seas.

Sailing conditions also change within the fjords. A useful breeze in one stretch may fade around the next bend. The ship may use her engine when necessary to maintain progress or navigate safely.

Norwegian weather varies with latitude, season and local geography. Bring warm layers and waterproofs, even for a summer voyage. Then you can spend time on deck comfortably as sunshine gives way to cloud or rain.

Long summer days

Late spring and summer bring long daylight hours, giving you more time to enjoy the coast. An evening anchorage can remain light well after supper.

Further north, above the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun occurs for part of the summer. Its timing depends on how far north you travel. Bergen and Stavanger have long summer days, but they do not experience the midnight sun.

For spring voyages, the contrast between green shores and snow remaining on higher ground can be particularly striking. Later in the season, the changing light brings a different character to the same coastline.

Your floating home, with time ashore

A sailing vessel carries your accommodation with you. Instead of changing hotels, you settle into life aboard while the surroundings change.

Depending on the itinerary, the ship may berth in a town or anchor away from the busier waterfronts. When conditions allow, visits ashore add another dimension to the journey.

A short walk can reveal gardens, boat sheds and the everyday life of a coastal community. Meanwhile, longer walks may offer views across the anchorage. Walking opportunities depend on the landing place, weather and time available.

Back aboard, meals provide time to compare what everyone has seen. For many guests, this shared rhythm becomes as memorable as the scenery.

Which ship and voyage should I choose?

Start with the kind of journey you want. A voyage exploring fjords and coastal harbours differs from a passage sailing to Norway across the North Sea. Check how much of the itinerary takes place within Norwegian waters.

Eye of the Wind offers traditional brig sailing with twin cabins and ensuite facilities. Her professional crew welcome beginners, and taking part in sailing is optional. This makes her worth considering if you want to combine fjord scenery with comfortable accommodation aboard a working tall ship.

Across the wider programme, ships and routes vary by season. Compare cabin arrangements, time ashore, sailing distances and the level of participation expected. Also check the joining and leaving ports, particularly for voyages finishing somewhere different.

If you are unsure, tell us what appeals to you about Norway. We can help you distinguish between a holiday exploring the coast and a voyage focused on the passage.
