This short sailing trip would make for a fantastic taster voyage if you’re new to square rig, or a great early season traditional sailing fix for anyone! From Eye of the Wind’s accessible mooring in Eckernförde, sail along the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast. Stop over in a port in the Danish South Sea- options include Bagenkop, Marstal or Sønderborg depending on the weather.
Even with just a few days on board, you’ll get into the swing of life on a tall ship and enjoy becoming part of the crew. The comfy cabins and great hospitality are a bonus too!

You start your voyage in Eckernförde on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein. The harbour here is the centre of the town, with an attractive promenade and a wide variety of vessels. The 4km long sandy beach is just a few minutes’ walk away and ideal for a dip in the sea before you embark. Also worth seeing is the 13th century St Nicolai’s church, whose tower offers great views of the city and the sea.
Stepping aboard Eye of the Wind, you’ll get to know your fellow crew over dinner and receive a full safety briefing, plus an up to date itinerary based on the latest weather forecast.
A short trip on Eye of the Wind in the Baltic is pretty much the ideal tall ship taster. Enjoy sheltered waters with a good sailing breeze, and learn some real traditional seamanship.
You’ll take in the rugged beauty of the Schleswig-Holstein coast and venture into Danish waters. Keep your eyes peeled for porpoises playing near the bow, and sea birds circling overhead. There are some stunning landscapes too, like the chalk cliffs of Rügen or the ancient lighthouses that have been guiding sailors for centuries. With a good wind filling the sails, you’ll feel like an adventurer from yesteryear, albeit with better catering!
En route the crew will get you as involved as you like with the sailing of the ship, and will teach you to steer, keep lookout, haul lines and set and trim sails. Of course you can also just sit back and enjoy the view if you’d prefer!
The captain decides the course of each day’s leg and an accessible harbour or anchorage for the night. This is based on the current wind and weather conditions and – whenever possible – the wishes of the guest crew. The trip will become its own pleasant mixture of active holiday, relaxation, adventure, sail training and shoreside exploration.
April brings fresh spring sailing in the Baltic. Winds are typically light to moderate from the southwest and northwest, with sea states of 1–2 metres. Daytime temperatures range from 8–12°C, dropping to 3–6°C at night. Visibility is generally good, though passing showers are common. The days are long—nearly 14 hours of daylight—giving plenty of time for sailing and exploration.
On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes for the forecast. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described above, but when it comes to sailing, you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. Suitcases take up a lot of room in a cabin, so it is better to uses soft bags in a ship. A small rucksack for going ashore is useful.
All the power to your plug sockets comes from the ship's generator which runs on deisel. The less the generators have to run to top up power, the nicer it is for the guests on board and also greener for the planet. Please don't bring loads of hairdriers, electric devices to charge.
There is no internet on board whilst at sea.
The Captain's style was excellent.. so skilled, authoritative but never shouty, always caring, kind, funny & interested in people. I was So impressed that the crew were majority of girls, so strong, brave, knowledgeable & keen. 20yrs ago there might have been 1 or 2 token girls in crew & now they run the ship!
Boys also wonderful of course & chef Dennis was excellent. Im old enough to be Granny to most, but no ageism, sexism or patronising attitudes so thankyou for that.
The stops on the Danish islands were good use of time. So clean, green, pretty, & v.friendly. Unfavourable wind meant we couldn't sail as much as hoped but last day we got 12 of 15 sails up. Helming a tall ship in full sail is such a privilege. Wow.!
