Step aboard the Santa Maria Manuela for a 4-night voyage from the southern coast of Sardinia to the picturesque Ligurian port of La Spezia. This passage offers a rich mix of coastal sailing and open-water navigation through the Tyrrhenian Sea, ideal for those eager to experience life at sea aboard a historic tall ship (or just kick back and relax with beautiful views!).

The capital of Sardinia is a city framed by hills and coastal lagoons, with a rich history and a bustling marina. It’s a fabulous place to explore, so get here a few days early if you can and soak it all in!
The old city climbs above the waterfront, so you can look down on the harbour approaches and watch ships arriving. Castello district and the old bastions give excellent vantage points. There’s also a charming maritime museum focused on traditional Sardinian boats and fishing craft. Nearby beaches like Poetto are long and open. Inland, you’ve got salt flats with flamingos, and rugged hills within cycling reach if you fancy hiring a bike.
Stepping aboard the Santa Maria Manuela you’ll be greeted with a tour and safety induction. Then you can settle into your cabin before getting to know your fellow sailors over dinner on board.
Departing from Cagliari, enjoy the views of hills and salt flats, as Santa Maria Manuela sets a course northward along the rugged west coast of Sardinia. Weather and wind permitting, you may follow the coast before crossing the open sea past Corsica and into the sheltered waters of the Ligurian Gulf.

Your crew are a friendly and knowledgeable bunch, and will be happy to ‘show you the ropes’ – literally! Volunteers to hoist and trim the sails speed are always welcome, and the feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is a unique experience! You might also want to climb the mast, or out onto the bowsprit (not at all compulsory, but going ‘aloft’ is, in our opinion, one of the highlights of a tall ship voyage).
La Spezia is the gateway to the ‘Cinque Terre’, a National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site covering five centuries-old villages and the beautiful hiking trails between them. Take some time to explore as this is one of the most picturesque parts of Italy.

Mid-March in this part of the Mediterranean is generally mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15 to 19°C. Conditions may include a mix of sunshine and cloud, with some chance of passing showers. Winds tend to be moderate, offering good sailing opportunities, though the open passage around Corsica may bring livelier seas. Nights are cool and layered clothing is recommended.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
Nestled in a bay on Sardinia’s southern coast, the island’s capital is a beautiful port city with Roman and Phoenician roots. Fantastic medieval architecture, great food and the flamingos at the nearby Molentargius-Saline Natural Park are all worth spending some time over!
Situated on the Ligurian Sea between Genoa and Pisa, La Spezia is dominated by its maritime history and the ongoing naval presence. The Museo Tecnico Navale is excellent. La Spezia is also the perfect place from which to explore the ‘Cinque Terre’ or ‘Five Towns’, a national park and UNESCO site, with lovely walking routes through some of the region’s most picturesque old ports and villages.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
