The Stockholm Archipelago

30,000 Islands & Serene Baltic Sailing

The Stockholm archipelago, known as “skärgården” to the locals, is an array of 30,000 islands, islets and skerries covering an area of over 650 square miles. There is a huge amount to explore here, as well as some fantastic Baltic sailing to be had.

There are fairly good transport connections to many of the larger islands in the group. These accessible islands include Vaxholm (the capital of the archipelago) with its historic Fortress Museum and Grinda, a popular summer getaway and nature reserve.

Exploring by sail, however, allows you to steer a course off the beaten track (if you’ll excuse the mixed metaphor!). Thanks to Sweden’s ‘Allemansrätten‘ (right to roam), you can anchor and land almost anywhere. This gives you access to the thousands of islands without transport connections, many of which are uninhabited with beautiful natural harbours.

A sailing trip in the Stockholm Archipelago therefore offers a fantastic balance between vibrant Nordic culture and peaceful wilderness.
