Keep on Sailing in October

Why October is Ideal for Sailing in Cornwall and Devon
October is an excellent month for sailing in Cornwall and Devon. The weather is variable, but there’s usually enough wind for a good sail. Even when the weather turns wild, the region offers sheltered ‘drowned river valleys’ like Helford River, River Dart, and River Fal. These spots are perfect for calmer sailing experiences or for on-shore activities.

Understanding October Weather Patterns for Safe Sailing – Dramatic Weather
Sailors should be prepared for October’s unpredictable weather in Cornwall and Devon. While the wind is typically strong, sudden changes can occur. Being aware of weather forecasts and understanding local patterns are crucial for a safe and enjoyable sailing experience. It’s also a good time to practise handling different wind conditions.

Exploring the Drowned River Valleys: Safe Havens for Sailors
The drowned river valleys, known locally as rias, are unique to this region. They provide safe havens for sailors during rough weather. Sailing up these valleys not only offers shelter but also presents an opportunity to explore the picturesque landscapes and wildlife of Cornwall and Devon. These locations are perfect for those looking for a more relaxed sailing experience.

Sailing Gear and Preparation for October Weather
Waterproof gear is essential for October sailing, it does not need to be full on sailing kit but it does need to be very waterproof. It is always cooler on the water so to keep warm think of layers, fleeces and the like. You never know it could be unseasonably warm. Understanding the weather, books to study.

Keeping an eye on the sky it will keep you prepared for dramatic weather, it’s a great time to sail.

I’v love sailing in the Autumn, the quick changes in the weather keep you on your toes and you feel like your getting the most out of the sailing season.
