Join a 5-day sojourn across the spellbinding waters of the Mediterranean aboard the newly renovated Santa Maria Manuela. This voyage combines the elements of adventure, culture, and history in a delightful blend that will leave you craving more.
We kick off this voyage in the ancient port town of Port Torres in Sardinia. Founded by Julius Caesar, this charming locale offers a delicious melange of cultural richness and gastronomic wonders. Make time before you embark to explore the local Roman ruins, thermal baths, and the Antonine Palace. Dive into the bustling markets with their fresh seafood and handmade Sardinian crafts.
Setting sail, our next point of interest is the Asinara National Park. Once known as “Devil’s Island” and used as a prison, the island is now a sanctuary for an array of flora and fauna. It boasts what is considered Sardinia’s most stunning beach, characterised by a coastline strewn with white quartz pebbles.
As we meander towards Menorca, you’ll have the chance to grasp the wheel and hoist the sails. Our crew are as enthusiastic about sharing their sailing knowledge as they are skilled in navigating these waters. Knot-tying classes serve as a delightful pastime, and if conditions permit, don’t miss a climb up the mast or a leisurely rest on the bowsprit.
We then make our way to Mahon, a town with a maritime history as deep as the tranquil bay it overlooks. It’s been everything from a Roman naval base to a British stronghold. Wander its meandering, pastel-lined streets and perhaps indulge in some delicious local tapas along the seafront.
Our final stretch takes us to Barcelona, a city teeming with history, architecture, and vibrant culture. Its maritime roots are showcased in a tradition of shipbuilding that stretches back to Roman times. The voyage concludes with a celebratory deck BBQ and, after disembarking, you can wander into the historic heart of Barcelona, notably the Gothic Quarter and the iconic Sagrada Família.
When embarking on a sailing adventure, it’s important to understand that the word “itinerary” takes on a flexible meaning. This isn’t a road trip where you can plan each stop down to the minute. Instead, we embrace what we call a dynamic itinerary. Our skippers are as excited as you are to experience the voyage’s potential highlights, but the ultimate guide here is Mother Nature. We navigate in harmony with her, never against her.
So, what’s a dynamic itinerary? It means our captain or skipper is always prepared with a plan that’s anything but set in concrete. Weather conditions, sea currents, and other unexpected elements can lead to adjustments. However, rest assured that the final port is a constant goal and our track record for timely arrivals is something we’re really proud of.
In setting your expectations for the trip, know that our descriptions draw from a wealth of past experiences and voyages. However, they are not promises carved in stone; they are possibilities tethered to the realities of seafaring life. Routes, activities, and destinations are subject to change, often due to complex weather patterns, and safety requirements that may require swift decisions. That is the skill our Captains excel at.
So when you join us, come with an adventurous spirit and a willingness to let the voyage unfold as it will. Trust in the skill of your skipper, the strength of your vessel, and the wisdom of centuries of seafaring tradition. Here, the journey genuinely is the destination.

The weather should be warm and sunny but the winds are typically from the North so you might have to tack quite a lot, or do a bit of strategic motoring.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office on 01326 53 1234 and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.
You are going to be spending some time in the ports you embark and disembark from. These aren’t just logistical points; they’re opportunities for further enrichment. Take an extra day to discover what’s beyond the harbour. It’s not merely about filling time; it’s about making the entire journey worthwhile.
Keeping in Touch
The exact location of your ship may not be known until closer to your joining time, you will be informed by email once the exact position has been confirmed. Make sure you take a note of the ship’s mobile/cell phone number with you in case you are delayed or there are any other problems on the day.
History
Port Torres is steeped in history. It’s one of Sardinia’s most ancient cities, founded by the Phoenicians and later expanded by the Romans. A visit to the Archaeological Museum is a must, as is the Romanesque San Gavino Basilica, which offers a glimpse into the deep-rooted history of this island gem.
Culture
Sardinian culture is quite distinct from mainland Italy. There are colourful festivals like the Carnevale Turritano. It’s not your everyday Carnevale; it’s a striking amalgamation of Sardinian traditions, parades, and masked performances that can’t be found anywhere else.
Sites of Interest to a Sailor
Port Torres offers some of the most enchanting sea views in the Mediterranean. Take a walk along the coastline and you’ll encounter rocky headlands and small bays that might just tickle your nautical fancies. Though we don’t really care for marinas, the sight of traditional fishing boats in the old harbour is something to savour. Lighthouses? The nearby Capo Falcone Lighthouse is iconic.
Entertainment
If you’re after a bit of evening enjoyment, you’ll find a selection of local pubs and wine bars where you can enjoy live music, ranging from jazz to traditional Sardinian melodies.
Eating Out
Port Torres is a treasure trove when it comes to seafood. Try some local bottarga, or if you’re feeling a tad adventurous, a dish featuring Sardinian fregola. The local wines aren’t too shabby either.
Nature
The surrounding landscape is dotted with nature reserves. Monte d’Accoddi, for example, offers hiking trails that lead you to a prehistoric altar, surrounded by natural beauty. The nearby beaches are also worth exploring, especially for a seasoned sailor with an eye for serene settings.
Unique Features
Port Torres is one of the few places where you’ll find a blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty all rolled into one. Its proximity to the Asinara National Park, an uninhabited island and nature reserve, offers something a tad different than your usual port town.
Accommodation
There are several boutique hotels and even a few spa retreats for those looking to unwind before or after their sailing adventures.

Weather in Port Torres
Winter is mild but can be windy; spring brings blooming flora and temperate weather; summer is hot, perfect for beach visits; and autumn, while still warm, starts to cool down, making it perfect for hiking and outdoor activities.

Sites of Interest to a Sailor
To the sailor’s eye, the coastline offers more than just a picturesque view.
