Voyage Description

Azores Atlantic Ocean Voyage on Tall Ship Sailing Morgenster with Classic Sailing

Setting Sail from Lisbon

Lisbon is a fascinating jumping-off point for this trip, and we would highly recommend spending a few days here before your board. The Maritime Museum is second to none. The riverfront gives constant traffic: ferries, tugs, naval craft, sometimes sail training ships. The Portuguese have a long seafaring tradition and still take pride in it. The old quarters like Alfama are built for walking and watching ships from above. Tram lines run past shipyards. Also, it helps that the food and wine are excellent!

Arriving at the ship, you’ll be welcomed aboard by the crew. Following a safety briefing and the chance to settle in to your cabin, you can get to know your fellow sailors over dinner.

Along the Way

The start of this voyage takes you underneath Lisbon’s iconic 25 de Abril bridge. As you pass Cascais and embrace life at sea, the crew invites you to join in on all aspects of sailing this historic 68m schooner. From hoisting the sails to taking the helm, we’d encourage you to get involved as much as possible to get the most from your trip.

Onboard, you can take part in knot-tying lessons, climb the mast for panoramic views, or relax in the bowsprit netting. In the evenings, unwind with a sunset drink on deck, and enjoy the dark, starry skies out of sight of land. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular at sea too.

As you near the Azores, keep an eye out for the magnificent marine life that frequents these waters. Whales, including sperm, blue, and fin, as well as playful dolphins, are often spotted in this region. If you can, climb the rig for the best chance to spot them!

Arriving in Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, is a beautiful city. If you have time to explore, consider hiring a car to reach high crater lakes like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. The roads wind up through cloud forest, past pastures and volcanic steam vents. There’s coastal walking almost everywhere, on old mule tracks between villages. The north coast in particular gives Atlantic swell thundering below you.

Wind, Waves & Weather

In July, you can expect warm, sunny days with temperatures ranging between 20-25°C. The north winds are generally steady and favourable. Nights are cooler, so a light jacket will come in handy for evening stargazing on deck. This is open ocean sailing, so be prepared for conditions to change- expect some big Atlantic swells and potential summer squalls.

Hands On Holidays

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’

Sailing Style and Life on Board

We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.

A Note on Voyage Descriptions

On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.

Start & End Port

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a city steeped in maritime history. The Maritime Museum and the Jerónimos Monastery are a nod to Portugal’s illustrious sea voyages. For history buffs, the Alfama district is a labyrinth of narrow streets, capturing Lisbon’s Moorish past.

Fado music often wafts through the air as you navigate the city’s hilly streets. If you find yourself here in June, you’ll catch the vibrant Festas de Lisboa, featuring a parade of colourful sardine floats.

Ponta Delgada, Azores

What sets Ponta Delgada apart are the black-and-white mosaics decorating the town’s pavements and walls, a testament to the volcanic rocks that form the island. Sao Miguel island offers fantastic hiking opportunities- well worth spending some days here to stretch your legs before or after your voyage.

What to Bring

For any destination north of Cape Verde warm and waterproof clothing is very important, as it can get cold during sailing, especially at night, even in the summer. A waterproof and windproof jacket is recommended to help keep warm and dry. Waterproof rubber soled boots or shoes are also recommended to keep your feet dry and warm. It is a good idea to bring two pairs of shoes in case one gets wet as salt water soaked shoes take a while to dry. Madeira, Portugal and the Azores in summer can get pretty hot and it is easy to get sunburn at sea as the air is clear. The Cape Verde are in a tropical climate so a good sun screen is essential. Please remember that space on board is limited and pack accordingly. Pack comfortable and practical clothing for all weather circumstances, the key is layers!! It is recommended to pack in a soft bag that can be easily stored away as there is no room on board for suitcases. Electricity on board is European 2 pin sockets, please be sure to bring any adaptors you may need.

If you voyage is sailing in foreign waters, you will require a full passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end of the voyage. Review

We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Ian & Dayna

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
