Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, is a beautiful city. If you have time to explore, consider hiring a car to reach high crater lakes like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. The roads wind up through cloud forest, past pastures and volcanic steam vents. There’s coastal walking almost everywhere, on old mule tracks between villages. The north coast in particular gives Atlantic swell thundering below you.
Arriving at the ship, you’ll be welcomed aboard by the crew. Following a safety briefing and the chance to settle in to your cabin, you can get to know your fellow sailors over dinner.

Your crew are a friendly and knowledgeable bunch, and will be happy to ‘show you the ropes’ – literally! The feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is a unique experience! You might also want to climb the mast, or out onto the bowsprit (not at all compulsory, but going ‘aloft’ is, in our opinion, one of the highlights of a tall ship voyage). Climbing the rig also gives you the best chance to spot marine life. Whales, including sperm, blue, sei and fin, as well as playful dolphins, are often spotted in this region.
You’ll sail into the Sao Jorge Channel under the imposing volcanic shadow of Mt. Pico which dominates the horizon. A stop on nearby Faial offers the chance to visit Horta and the famous Peter’s Café Sport bar, frequented by sailors since 1918. The quayside is a spectacle in itself… covered in murals by ships’ crews from all over the world who have stopped off here.

You’ll finish your voyage on Terceira Island, anchoring in the bay of UNESCO-listed Angra do Heroísmo, the Azores’ oldest city. Disembark after a deck BBQ and an evening of celebrations with your fellow shipmates. Take some time to explore this beautiful Renaissance town with its 16th-century fortress. Consider visiting nearby Algar do Carvão with its 90m-deep volcanic chimney, or the island’s vineyards and lava-rock bathing pools in Biscoitos.

In July, you can expect settled weather, moderate northerlies, and mild seas. There may be occasional brief squalls, but they pass quickly. The Azores are in the middle of the Atlantic, so the swell around the islands can be considerable, but the archipelago itself offers good shelter. Daytime temperatures will be around 22–26 °C, dropping to 17–20 °C at night.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
What sets Ponta Delgada apart are the black-and-white mosaics decorating the town’s pavements and walls, a testament to the volcanic rocks that form the island. Sao Miguel island offers fantastic hiking opportunities- well worth spending some days here to stretch your legs before or after your voyage.
Angra do Heroísmo on the island of Terceira is the Azores’ oldest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss its 16th-century fortress and Renaissance streets. Consider visiting the Algar do Carvão with its 90-meter volcanic chimney, as well as the vineyards and lava pools in Biscoitos.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
