This is one of Santa Maria Manuela’s most popular voyages- a mini-Atlantic crossing from the Azores to Portugal. 8 nights on board offers a fantastic chance to experience life at sea, but with the added comforts of the ship’s renowned hospitality. Arrive early and explore the beautiful islands of the Azores. Make sure you keep an eye out for whales!

Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, is a beautiful city. If you have time to explore, consider hiring a car to reach high crater lakes like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. The roads wind up through cloud forest, past pastures and volcanic steam vents. There’s coastal walking almost everywhere, on old mule tracks between villages. The north coast in particular gives Atlantic swell thundering below you.
Arriving at the ship, you’ll be welcomed aboard by the crew. Following a safety briefing and the chance to settle in to your cabin, you can get to know your fellow sailors over dinner.

Striking out from the Azores, keep an eye out for the magnificent marine life that frequents these waters. Whales, including sperm, blue, and fin, as well as playful dolphins, are often spotted in this region. If you can, climb the rig for the best chance to spot them!
Your crew are a friendly and knowledgeable bunch, and will be happy to ‘show you the ropes’ – literally! The feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is a unique experience! You can take part in knot-tying lessons, climb the mast for panoramic views, or relax in the bowsprit netting. In the evenings, unwind with a sunset drink on deck, and enjoy the dark, starry skies out of sight of land. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular at sea too.

Sailing into Lisbon is a striking way to end your voyage, as Santa Maria Manuela sails beneath the city’s iconic 25 de Abril bridge. Lisbon is a fascinating place, and we would highly recommend spending a few days here before your onward journey. The Maritime Museum is second to none. The riverfront gives constant traffic: ferries, tugs, naval craft, sometimes sail training ships. The Portuguese have a long seafaring tradition and still take pride in it. The old quarters like Alfama are well worth exploring. Also, it helps that the food and wine are excellent!
September offers a pleasant and usually straightforward downwind passage—enough breeze for steady progress, warm weather, and the tail end of the summer Azores High before stronger autumn systems set in. Expect 10–18 kn (Force 3–5) from the northwest. Stronger periods up to 25 kn (Force 6) can occur with frontal systems. The Atlantic swell is long and usually fairly comfortable, about 1.5–2.5 m. Seas can get choppier if the wind shifts, so be prepared for that. Expect daytime temperatures of around 22–26 °C offshore, dropping to 17–20 °C at night.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
São Miguel (also known as ‘Ilha Verde’, the Green Island) is the largest in the Azores archipelago. The island is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades offer stunning crater lakes amidst lush greenery. There are great hiking trails through the Gorreana Tea Plantations if you’re in need of a leg stretch, and the Terra Nostra Park’s thermal baths are just the ticket after a long time at sea!
Lisbon is a city steeped in maritime history. The Maritime Museum and the Jerónimos Monastery are a nod to Portugal’s illustrious sea voyages. For history buffs, the Alfama district is a labyrinth of narrow streets, capturing Lisbon’s Moorish past.
Fado music often wafts through the air as you navigate the city’s hilly streets. If you find yourself here in June, you’ll catch the vibrant Festas de Lisboa, featuring a parade of colourful sardine floats.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
