Board the ‘Morgenster’ in Horta, Faial for a memorable ocean voyage. Faial, lush in spring, offers a perfect setting with its early spring climate and varied weather. Prepare for diverse conditions – bring both shorts and a raincoat. Upon boarding, the crew will guide you through safety, life on board, and the journey ahead.
Our trip, with few stopovers, promises exciting sailing. Expect changeable weather and possibly westerly winds. Sailing activities like setting sails and changing course will be frequent. Wildlife sightings, including whales, dolphins, and birds, add to the adventure, especially as we near the English Channel with its nutrient-rich waters and diverse marine life.
You’ll join the crew, actively participating in sailing the Morgenster. No sailing experience is needed; the crew will teach you everything. Your involvement can be as hands-on as you choose. The journey ends at Den Helder’s historic maritime hub.

Experienced sailors or ocean lovers that love ocean voyages and the life of a blue water sailor. Once you set off your life is totally dictated by the weather and natural elements. This voyage is likely to offer the full range of ocean weather from lighter winds at the start in the Azores and possibly a rough and cold crossing of the Bay of Biscay, but at least the spring time westerly depressions are generally blowing you the right way.
Starting in the Azores is a bonus as the seas around the Azores and on the edge of the continental shelf all the way to North Biscay are rich in fish so there is always plenty of marine life and birds to see. The Azores is one of the best places in Europe to spot cetaceans and the best time of the year is during the Spring time. In April there are many fin whales, blue whales and sei whales passing the Azores on their annual migration.
On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described below, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage.
The main mission for the ship is to get back to Den Helder as swiftly and safely as possible, and that means sailing as much as possible but there will be some headwinds on some of the route and possibility of rough weather. As the voyage is billed as a mile maker the price is fixed for the voyage but it is always possible the ship may get into port a few days earlier. This is a challenging ocean passage and ports are often many days away so it is not a voyage for those with any health problems or prone to seasickness.
If the ship makes good time and you arrive 1 or 2 days early in Morgenster’s home port, then the ships crew can show you their favourite haunts! The Classic Sailing team have visited Den Helder several times and it is a great working port with a young vibrant atmosphere, a lot of waterfront and things to see and do. The train makes it is easy to get to Schipol Amsterdam Airport or anywhere in Europe from Amsterdam.
Ocean sailing in the Westerlies belt often means gale – less winds – next gale as the depression systems hurtle across the Atlantic. The day light hours, weather and temperatures will be at their best for the first few days on board as you explore the archipelago of Cape Verde, but be prepared for potential foul weather as you head North.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.There is a Captain, Mate, couple of deck hands, engineer and chef so the ships guest crew will need to work hard as a team to race this impressive ship.

How to Get There
Getting to Horta, Azores depends on your starting point. Here’s a general guide:
From the UK and Europe: Flying is the most direct option. Usually, you’ll find a flight to Lisbon and from there catch a connecting flight to Horta Airport.
From North America: Flights often transit through Lisbon. Some major U.S. cities offer direct flights to Lisbon, from where you can get a connecting flight to Horta.
From Australia: Be prepared for at least one layover, typically in a major European city like London or Lisbon. Then continue with a smaller flight to Horta.
Since Horta is an island, there are no trains or buses going there directly. However, if you’re already in the Azores, you can take a ferry to Horta. On the island itself, coaches and buses are more for tours rather than transit from other places.
What to Do in Horta
History: Visit the Horta Museum to delve into the island’s rich maritime past. Peter Café Sport is also worth a visit; it has been serving sailors for more than 100 years.
Culture: Experience local festivals like the Semana do Mar, which celebrates the region’s maritime heritage.
Sites of Interest to a Sailor: The marina in Horta is a key stopping point for transatlantic yachts. You’ll also find a variety of sailing tours that offer a different perspective of the island.
Entertainment: For a small place, Horta has a lively nightlife scene. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, local music, and friendly bars.
Eating Out: Seafood is king in Horta. Restaurants by the marina offer not only fresh catch but also incredible views.
Nature: Horta offers stunning natural beauty. From hiking trails to volcanic landscapes and whale watching, there’s plenty for outdoor enthusiasts to explore.
Unique Features: One unique feature is the sailor’s tradition of painting a mural on the marina wall before setting sail again. It gives Horta a communal feel that’s quite special.

Climbing in the rigging, unfurling the sails on the yardarm.
The cameraderie between the paid and guest crew was second to none. A fantastic atmosphere. Singing in the evenings on deck accompanied by guitar and trumpet. New Year on St Lucia, we celebrated the New Year 3 times (once for Dutch/European time, once for GMT and once for Caribbean time).
