If you have always wanted to paint or sketch boats then this is the perfect art course. Join Classic Boat illustrator and art teacher Claudia Myatt aboard pilot cutter Tallulah.
The skipper Debbie Purser is a keen artist and has run art themed voyages with Claudia before. We think we have found the perfect gathering of traditional boats for you to sketch, amongst the backdrop of one of the most scenic Cornish ports. Mousehole Sea Salt and Sail gathering brings small boats, luggers and gaffers into its tiny granite walled port, and we have the iconic Mount Bay as a sailing ground during the day.
Claudia has sketched and painted all round the work on sailing boats from Antarctica to Easter Island. She lives on a boat on the East Coast and has run many art courses including many beginners workshops entitled ‘drawing for the terrified.’ She illustrates for RYA publications, Classic Boat Magazine and makes and sells her own merchandise and books. Claudia is also a musician with a good repertoire of shanties and singalong revelry.
There will be a maximum of 5 guests with Skipper and Claudia running the art programme. Solo travellers welcome, but we also have a lovely double bed cabin for couples.
Keen artists wanting tips on drawing moving boats, sea and nautical scenes. Anyone who wants to feel more confident picking up a pencil or brush and just having a go at sketching some incredible boats.
Tallulah is more than a wide decked platform to sketch from. She is a livey wooden beauty that is dying to show off her own beautiful design lines and cream sails. You will be helping set sail, and we go ashore by rowing boat, so you will start to feel distinctly salty and sailor like.

If you are more of a budding artist than a sailor then the 3 days starts and finishes in Newlyn, and if the weather is fine we will anchor overnight off the tiny port of Mousehole, which dries out to golden sand at low water. If the wind is strong then we can sail in Mounts Bay amongst the visiting boats and return to the shelter of Newlyn fishing harbour in the evening. Either way the festivities are nearby and there is always something to sketch in these busy, but so different working harbours.
If you are a super keen sailor who also wants to sketch and paint, then you could do this voyage and the preceding voyage TH020724 which involves a coastal sail from St Mawes, around the Lizard to Newlyn. £100 off for anyone booking both trips. With fast tides and a big headland to sail around this is sometimes quite challenging but great for wildlife spotting.
After Mousehole Tallulah will be sailing to France for Brest Festival of the Sea 2024 and Douarnenez Wooden Boat festival Temp Fetes 2024. Many traditional boats will come via Mounts Bay so you may find some bigger vessels joining us in the bay.

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities, and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.
The address for the Strand in Newlyn is; Strand, Newlyn, TR18 5HW. Take a note of the ship’s phone number sent in your confirmation in case you cannot see your vessel.
Please limit yourself to one soft bag or rucksack as there is limited storage space on board. No suitcases please!
Tallulah does not have waterproof jacket and trousers yet, so please bring a properly waterproof jacket and trousers on all voyages.
Walking and cycling waterproofs are usually adequate and much lighter to pack, so there really is no need to buy a coastal sailing jacket (unless you really want an excuse to invest in your future sailing). If you need any advice, or lack of a jacket is preventing you participating, please ring us on 01326 53 1234
Alcohol
Tallulah does not always have wine bottles for sale on board so you are welcome to bring modest quantities of alcohol, (unless it is an alcohol free voyage) e.g. to drink with evening meals, but drinking whilst sailing is not allowed.
Photos and images of the striking 44ft pilot cutter Tallulah, offering charter voyages for individuals, couples and groups from 2022. Based in St Mawes, Cornwall. No experience is necessary and a local skipper as your guide.
