Known as the “Capital of the Highlands,” Inverness offers a blend of rich history and natural beauty. Before setting sail, explore the iconic Inverness Castle and stroll along the River Ness, soaking in the serene ambience of this historic city.
As we navigate through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, prepare to be mesmerized by a tapestry of breathtaking landscapes. Our journey takes us along the Caledonian Canal, famed for its scenic splendor. Witness the majestic Loch Ness, shrouded in mystery and folklore. Keep an eye out for the elusive Nessie, the legendary Loch Ness Monster.
The voyage offers more than mythical creatures; it’s a gateway to observing diverse wildlife, including golden eagles and red deer. The highlight is the passage through Neptune’s Staircase, the longest lock staircase in Great Britain. Marvel at the engineering marvel and the panoramic views of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak.
The Sound of Mull, a strait in the Inner Hebrides, promises awe-inspiring vistas and a chance to spot dolphins, whales, and sea birds. This passage, with its tranquil waters and captivating scenery, epitomizes the essence of Scottish beauty.
Our journey culminates in Oban, a charming coastal town renowned for its seafood and the gateway to the isles. Spend an extra day exploring the bustling harbour, sample fresh seafood, and visit the Oban Distillery for a taste of local whisky. Don’t miss McCaig’s Tower, offering panoramic views of the town and surrounding islands. Oban’s serene environment provides the perfect conclusion to our memorable voyage.
July in Scotland brings milder weather, ideal for sailing. Expect calm seas and gentle breezes in the sheltered waters of the Caledonian Canal and Sound of Mull. However, be prepared for occasional rain and mist, adding a mystical touch to the Scottish landscapes. Navigating these waters requires skill, but the tranquillity and beauty they offer are well worth the effort.
On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes for the forecast. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described above, but when it comes to sailing, you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. Handling cargo adds an extra dimension – building teamwork and communication skills and leaving you with a great sense of achievement.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
The exact location for joining your vessel isn’t likely to be known until closer to the time, make sure you have a copy of the ship’s phone number to find them on the day.
For joining your vessel in Oban, the North Pier in the map shown below will be the best place to meet the crew. Your vessel will either be tied up alongside the wall, or out at anchor. Make sure you take a note of the ship’s number found in your confirmation in case of any problems on the day.
