Sail aboard the star of Channel 4’s ‘Mutiny’

The story of Captain William Bligh’s extraordinary leadership and survival skills after the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty is the stuff of legend. Following the 1789 mutiny, Bligh and his few loyal men made the incredible 4000 mile journey from close to the Kingdom of Tonga to Timor in a 23-foot open boat.

In 2016 ‘Bounty’s End’, a replica of Bligh’s open boat, was built by Mark Edwards MBE. It was used for a reconstruction of the voyage, using only traditional navigation and meagre rations, skippered by Conrad Humphreys and filmed for the Channel 4 series ‘Mutiny’.

After the voyage, Conrad acquired the boat, and now runs her from Plymouth, offering school groups and members of the public the chance to sail and navigate her, as part of a living-history programme.

What this vessel does best

Get Back to Basics

Bounty’s End offers you the opportunity to enjoy stripped-back sailing, getting close to the water, the wind and nature. This kind of sailing is like taking a huge lungful of the freshest air. You feel properly alive and connected, to the people you sail with as well as to the natural world.

Bounty’s End is a beautifully stable boat, nothing like tippy little racing dinghys or fibreglass yachts. If you’re new to sailing, or want to introduce your passion to someone else who might be nervous about the idea, this is a lovely place to start.

All of this, plus the chance to explore the infinitely fascinating history and geography of Plymouth Sound (and beyond!), and the story behind the boat herself- a living piece of maritime heritage.

What to expect

Sailing Style

Originally a lugger, Bounty’s End is also often rigged as a gaff cutter, which enables her to sail closer to the wind, and makes her more versatile for estuary exploration. You’ll receive training and instruction on how to steer, trim, tack, gybe, raise and lower sails, and row, so you can get fully involved with handling the boat. You’ll also receive fascinating insights into both the history of the Bounty Project and the heritage of the local area.

In 2018 Conrad installed an electric motor into Bounty’s End, settling on an 8kw Lynch regenerative motor that recharges whilst the boat is under sail. The benefits of an electric motor are huge, with no noise (or pollution), allowing for whisper-quiet wildlife spotting even in tricky-to-access places.

Life on Board

Bounty’s End sails by day and anchors or moors up by night. On multi-day voyages, your overnight will be spent either wild-camping in a beautifully secluded spot, or glamping at the fabulous ‘Stones & Stars’ quarry, close to Bounty HQ. Have a look at the voyage description for your chosen voyage to see what your overnight provision will be or, if you’re interested in a bespoke trip, you can choose what suits you best.

Food is provided, with hearty lunches served on board and dinners cooked ashore, usually on an open fire. This includes the chance to cook any fish you might catch along the way!

Reviews

What a fascinating and active trip. Conrad literally shows you the ropes and then helps you get stuck in whilst telling tales of the Bounty, Bligh and his own adventures. Well worth it!

Josh

Wonderful from start to finish!

Sue

What a great weekend! Truly memorable and one we’ll all talk about over beers for a long time to come. Sailing on Bounty’s End was a real highlight for me. She’s such a unique boat to sail and you can feel her long voyage in her woodwork.

James

Such a special experience. A beautiful way to see Plymouth and an incredible glimpse of Captain Bligh and his men’s survival at sea. Conrad was great company and his stories make you see adventure on a whole new level. Don’t miss this!

Conrad Humphreys

Conrad is a highly accomplished yachtsman with over two decades of experience leading teams through some of the world’s most hostile environments. Conrad has raced around the world three times, including victory in the BT Global Challenge and becoming only the fifth British sailor to complete the legendary Vendée Globe.

More recently, he was selected as the professional skipper for Channel 4’s Mutiny, recreating the story of Lieutenant William Bligh’s epic 4,000-mile open boat journey across the South Pacific. It was during this voyage that he got to know Bounty’s End intimately, and acquired her soon afterwards!

It’s hard to find anyone more passionate about maritime history, and Conrad’s knowledge of Plymouth Sound, as well as of Bounty’s End and the Bligh story, is second-to-none. He’s also a lovely chap, and the perfect guide for a day or two on the water!
