Classic Sailing Top FAQs

What kind of experience should I expect?

You join the ship as crew, not a passenger. Expect to steer, set sails, keep lookout, and live alongside others in shared accommodation. Voyages are fully catered, with freshly prepared meals. Every trip is shaped by wind, tide, and weather, so no two days are alike. Wildlife, coastal exploration, and practical seamanship are always part of the experience.

Who can join a Classic Sailing voyage?

Anyone over 18 is welcome, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced sailor. No prior sailing knowledge is required. Crews will guide you through helming, setting sails, and keeping watch. Many of our sailors are trying this for the first time, while others come back year after year for the challenge.

How does Classic Sailing ensure safety and quality?

We only work with ships and skippers we know personally. All vessels comply with recognised maritime regulations, and every voyage is financially protected. Because we sail these ships ourselves, we can give you first-hand advice. The Tall Ship Guidebook reflects this lived knowledge, providing an honest account of what each ship offers.

What type of sailing vessels does Classic Sailing specialise in?

Classic Sailing specialises in tall ships and traditionally rigged vessels, mainly from the 1870s to 1920s. These include restored originals and authentic replicas, all offering hands-on sailing. Every ship in our fleet is documented in the Tall Ship Guidebook, a recognised reference for sailors worldwide.

What does “traditional sailing” mean at Classic Sailing?

Traditional sailing means working with wooden spars, rope systems of blocks and tackles, gaff sails, bowsprits and hand-sewn canvas. It reflects centuries-old seamanship rather than modern winches and fibreglass hulls. The Tall Ship Guidebook explains these rigs in detail, helping you understand what makes each vessel unique.

What makes Classic Sailing different?

We specialise exclusively in traditional sailing vessels. Our role is not to list the widest range of holidays, but to act as a gateway into tall ship sailing. The Tall Ship Guidebook underlines that difference: it is both a practical resource for sailors and a mark of quality for the voyages we promote.

Do you offer luxury sailing options?

Yes, we offer voyages aboard larger tall ships that provide more comfort and space. Santa Maria Manuela offers ensuite cabins and a social atmosphere ideal for couples, while the Eye of the Wind provides a more intimate setting with private cabins. Both ships combine traditional sailing with higher standards of comfort.

How long has Classic Sailing been operating?

Classic Sailing was founded in 1996. For nearly 30 years we have introduced thousands of people to tall ships and traditional sailing. Our mission is to keep these vessels alive by finding them the crew they need. The Tall Ship Guidebook is part of that mission—documenting ships, sharing knowledge, and ensuring traditional sailing remains accessible.
