Visit the islands of Terceira, Flores and Corvo
Join Santa Maria Manuela for a fascinating voyage through the mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago. The ship will have a guest Marine Biologist on board, who will be leading various activities including water sampling, surface dredging and analysis, as well as talks on the biodiversity of Flores island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. As well as some picturesque sailing, you’ll have opportunities to hike to stunning waterfalls and volcanic lagoons.
Why not extend your Azorean adventure and bolt-on the next voyage too? A 5-night round trip from Terceira taking in São Jorge and Pico.

Your adventure begins in the vibrant harbour of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira’s UNESCO World Heritage city. Known for its historic architecture and rich natural beauty, Terceira is the perfect starting point for this voyage.
Arriving at the ship, you’ll be welcomed aboard by the crew. Following a safety briefing and the chance to settle in to your cabin, you can get to know your fellow sailors over dinner.
This unique eco voyage is hosted for the third time by Santa Maria Manuela’s guest marine biologist, offering insights into the rich marine biodiversity of Flores and hands-on eco workshops aboard.
Your trip begins with an open-ocean crossing to Flores, the westernmost island in the mid-Atlantic Azores, and a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. You’ll spend two days here, exploring this green paradise, home to waterfalls and volcanic lagoons.
Consider hiking to one of the island’s many waterfalls. Ribeira Grande plunges down a granite cliff on the west coast. In contrast, the small Ribeira da Cruz waterfall drops into a quiet pond in a deep valley. The most iconic is Ribeira do Ferreiro, surrounded by dense forest, while Poço do Bacalhau, more accessible, falls 90 meters into a natural pool perfect for a swim.
Or opt for a bus tour to visit some of the island’s seven lakes, including Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa Funda, Lagoa Seca, Lagoa Branca, and Lagoa da Lomba. You may also spot nearby Corvo Island and the Monte Gorde volcano.

Life on board includes learning opportunities led by our marine biologist and supported by the crew. With a Manta Net and microscope donated by Waste Free Oceans, we collect and analyze water samples. In 2023, our findings included a blue dragon (Glaucus atlanticus), various plankton, and microplastics — sparking lively discussions.
After our island stay, the crew will be keen to set sail eastward. Guests are encouraged to get involved: hoisting sails, taking the helm, and helping trim for speed. Steering a 68-meter sailing ship and feeling her respond to your hand on the wheel is unforgettable.
Join a knot-tying session, share sailing stories, or, weather permitting, climb the mast or stretch out in the bowsprit netting. Sunset drinks on deck bring each day to a perfect close.

August in the Azores offers ideal conditions for sailing, with prevailing northwesterly winds that provide a smooth passage through the islands. Daytime temperatures range from a pleasant 22-27°C, making it warm enough for comfort but cool enough for activity. As evening falls, a light jacket will keep you comfortable on deck, especially when enjoying the cooler breeze and dazzling starlit skies. Expect some moderate swells as you cross open water, but generally comfortable seas in the shelter of the islands.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
Angra do Heroísmo on the island of Terceira is the Azores’ oldest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss its 16th-century fortress and Renaissance streets. Consider visiting the Algar do Carvão with its 90-meter volcanic chimney, as well as the vineyards and lava pools in Biscoitos.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
