Sail the Tyrrhenian Sea aboard the majestic Santa Maria Manuela, experiencing six nights of hands-on sailing, coastal exploration, and Italian culture. Departing from Naples, this journey takes you to Porto Santo Stefano, a picturesque 15th-century fishing town, before arriving in Livorno, Tuscany’s gateway to Pisa, Lucca, and Florence. Along the way, learn traditional sailing skills, climb the mast, and relax with breath taking sea views. With perfect late spring weather and Italy’s rich history at every stop, this voyage is a dream for sailors, explorers, and culture lovers alike.
Step aboard the historic 1937 tall ship Santa Maria Manuela for an unforgettable six-night sailing adventure from Naples to Livorno. This voyage is perfect for history lovers, culture seekers, and hands-on sailing enthusiasts. Whether you dream of exploring Italy’s coastal gems or experiencing the thrill of traditional sailing, this journey offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery.
Sail in comfort aboard the beautifully renovated four-masted schooner, take in breath taking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and explore iconic Italian destinations, from Naples’ historic grandeur to Porto Santo Stefano’s charm and Livorno’s gateway to Tuscany. Whether you’re hoisting sails, helming the ship, or simply unwinding on deck with a sunset drink, this voyage will leave you with lasting memories.
Your journey begins in Naples, a city where ancient history, rich culture, and legendary gastronomy converge. The birthplace of pizza, Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, brimming with historic landmarks, lively streets, and spectacular coastal views. Before setting sail, explore the city’s imposing castles, grand piazzas, and vibrant markets, or visit the nearby ruins of Pompeii for a step back in time.
As Santa Maria Manuela departs Naples, feel the excitement of setting sail from one of Italy’s most famous maritime cities, bound for the serene and beautiful coastline ahead.
Life aboard Santa Maria Manuela is as immersive as you choose. Join the crew in hoisting sails, taking the helm, or learning the art of traditional seamanship. For those seeking a thrill, mast climbing (weather permitting) offers breathtaking panoramic views of the sea. If you prefer to relax, stretch out on the bowsprit and feel the rhythm of the ship gliding through crystal-clear waters.
Our first stop, Porto Santo Stefano, is a picturesque 15th-century town on the Monte Argentario peninsula, known for its charming streets, fishing traditions, and world-class seafood. Wander its cobbled alleys, enjoy fresh local cuisine, or simply soak in the coastal beauty before we continue northward.
From here, we sail along the stunning Italian coastline, taking in dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and azure waters as we make our way to our final port.
Finally, we arrive in Livorno, a historic seafaring city and a gateway to Tuscany’s cultural treasures. After you disembark, take the opportunity to visit the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, explore Lucca’s medieval streets, or venture to Florence, home to Renaissance masterpieces and world-class museums. For those staying in Livorno, its fortified canals, seafood markets, and elegant architecture provide a charming farewell to this spectacular voyage.
Late May offers ideal sailing conditions along Italy’s Tyrrhenian coastline. Expect mild, pleasant temperatures, with daytime highs between 20°C and 24°C—perfect for sailing and sightseeing. Light breezes make for smooth sailing, while evenings are cooler, around 15°C, so bringing a light jacket is recommended for enjoying the fresh sea air after sunset.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. While we hope you will enjoy taking part in the many aspects of sailing a traditional ship, please be aware that we can’t control the weather – there will be occasions when the conditions are just not congruent with sailing to your anticipated destination and an alternative itinerary will be offered. There may also be occasions when there isn’t the wind needed to sail and so the crew will utilise the ships engines (if installed). On rare occasions, the voyage may need to be delayed or cancelled – please see the vessel’s Terms and Conditions before booking.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office on 01326 53 1234 and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
