Step aboard Sunbeam, a classic 1905 Lowestoft sailing trawler, and set sail through the stunning Stockholm Archipelago. These voyages offer a balance of adventure, culture, and comfort, all while you explore a landscape shaped by wind, weather, and tradition. Each day’s destination is uniquely chosen based on the conditions, making every trip a new experience. Whether you’re navigating the inner channels or discovering the outermost isles, Sunbeam will guide you through the natural beauty and rich history of this incredible sailing ground.
On Sunbeam, the journey is truly shaped by the wind and weather, as we adapt our route to make the most of each day. The archipelago stretches from Norrtälje and Arholma in the north to Nyköping in the south, offering a vast area to explore. The flexibility of our itinerary means we can tailor the experience to suit the conditions, providing opportunities for exhilarating sailing as well as tranquil moments anchored in sheltered harbours.
The summer months in the Stockholm Archipelago are generally mild, with temperatures ranging between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius. The influence of the Azores anticyclones provides calm, sunny days, perfect for sailing and exploring. Winds are usually moderate, and thanks to the narrow entrance of the Baltic Sea, there is little tidal range, creating a stable, almost lake-like environment ideal for both novices and seasoned sailors.
The Stockholm Archipelago is an enchanting tapestry of over 30,000 granite islands, each with its own unique character. On a week-long journey, we typically visit marinas on one or two nights, where guests can shower and we can replenish water and provisions. However, much of the time is spent in secluded natural harbours, where we anchor close to the shore using Swedish mooring techniques. This traditional approach, tying lines to tree trunks and rocks, not only provides secure mooring but also an authentic sailing experience.
Potential stops might include:
The archipelago’s hidden gems also include numerous natural harbours such as Napoleonviken, a mountain-encircled bay offering a safe haven for vessels, or Träskö Storö, where you can moor and row ashore for a sauna. These spots allow for barbecues on the rocks, swimming in the brackish yet gentle waters, and foraging for wild berries in summer.
The archipelago is not only a paradise for sailors but also for wildlife enthusiasts. During the summer, you might spot sea eagles soaring above, seals basking on the rocks, and a variety of seabirds in their natural habitat. During the summer months, the long daylight hours provide plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of the islands.
Historical landmarks also punctuate the journey. We might visit Siaröfortet, a World War I fortress now open as a museum, or Vaxholm Kastellet, a fortress guarding one of the main routes to Stockholm. Each of these sites offers a chance to delve into the region’s rich past, exploring military history amidst the stunning natural landscape.
Sailing on Sunbeam is both an adventure and a communal experience. With a hands-on approach, guests can participate in sail handling, navigation, and mooring. No prior experience is needed—our experienced crew provides guidance for all levels, making it an engaging way to learn traditional sailing skills.
The accommodation on Sunbeam includes a mix of single and double berths. Each space is equipped with a pillow, blanket, and storage, but guests need to bring their own sleeping bags, pillowcases, and towels. The galley is well-equipped, offering everything needed to prepare hearty meals, including vegetarian options. Guests are encouraged to participate in cooking, creating a communal atmosphere. Meals cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, and there is also a barbecue on deck for al fresco dining when conditions allow.
Non-alcoholic drinks are provided, and while we cannot sell alcoholic beverages due to Swedish regulations, guests are welcome to bring their own drinks for consumption when docked – at the skippers discretion
Anchoring in natural harbours provides an opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes, swim in clear, calm waters, and forage for wild berries. The shallow, brackish sea is perfect for refreshing dips, and many guests find swimming in these gentle waters as satisfying as a freshwater swim.
Worthwhile Journeys
You are going to be spending some time in the ports you embark and disembark from. These aren’t just logistical points; they’re opportunities for further enrichment. Take an extra day to discover what’s beyond the harbour. It’s not merely about filling time; it’s about making the entire journey worthwhile.
Keeping in Touch The exact location of your ship may not be known until closer to your joining time, you will be informed by email once the exact position has been confirmed. Make sure you take a note of the ship’s mobile/cell phone number with you in case you are delayed or there are any other problems on the day.

We will have a selection of low alcohol beer (2.8-3.5% vol) and guests are welcome to bring their own drinks of choice. Alcoholic beverages can only be consumed in moderation when docked, as per the skipper’s discretion. Strict sobriety is required for all involved in sailing or motoring.
