This voyage starts with a sail under Lisbon’s Ponte 25 de Abril bridge at sunset. This sets the tone for a picturesque minibreak full of lovely views and relaxed sailing. The prevailing wind is behind you as Santa Maria Manuela voyages South along the wild coastline of Costa Vincentina, before heading East along the Algarve. This is the perfect Autumn getaway- sunshine, scenery and a sea still warm enough to swim in.

You’ll join Santa Maria Manuela in the buzzing city of Lisbon. We’d recommend arriving early! Make the most of the opportunity to hear Fado music, visit historic neighbourhoods like Alfama, the Belem Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Plus, of course, the Maritime Museum is an absolute must.
After being welcomed aboard by the crew, you’ll receive a safety briefing and get to know your fellow sailors over dinner. Then it’s time to set sail, heading out of the city under the Ponte 25 de Abril at sunset!
Your crew are a friendly and knowledgeable bunch, and will be happy to ‘show you the ropes’ – literally! Volunteers to hoist and trim the sails speed are always welcome, and the feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is a unique experience! On a Classic Sailing holiday, you can do as much or as little as you like, but we do encourage you to get stuck in and take part. Of course, there’s always plenty of down time too!
Knot classes are a great way to learn a new skill whilst sharing sailing stories with shipmates, and if the weather allows there’s the opportunity to go up the mast or relax in the bowsprit netting. A drink at sunset on the deck is the perfect way to round off each day.
As Santa Maria Manuela rounds the Cape of Sao Vincent, don’t be surprised to see the ocean alive with activity. This confluence of the cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm waters of the mineral rich Mediterranean often attracts a riot of life with bait balls of small fish being targeted by seabirds, and ocean predators like tuna and dolphins.
Sailing East along the Algarve coast brings you to an anchorage off Portimão for a final evening’s celebration at the end of your voyage.
Traditionally a centre for shipbuilding and sardine fishing, Portimão is now a popular destination for beach holidays. It’s worth taking some time here to explore the town’s Roman history, try the local seafood and hear traditional Portuguese music in the bars in the older parts of town.
This should be a relaxed Autumn sail with favourable Northerly winds of around force 3 to 4 (10 to 15 knots). The sea can still be a little choppy on the Atlantic coast, but becomes more sheltered once sailing along the Algarve. The skies are often clear and sunny at this time of year, with daytime temperatures of 20–24°C, dropping to 14–17°C at night. Expect a few days with fog or haze in the mornings, and there might be occasional rain. As ever, be prepared for conditions to change!
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.
Lisbon is a city steeped in maritime history. The Maritime Museum and the Jerónimos Monastery are a nod to Portugal’s illustrious sea voyages. For history buffs, the Alfama district is a labyrinth of narrow streets, capturing Lisbon’s Moorish past.
Fado music often wafts through the air as you navigate the city’s hilly streets. If you find yourself here in June, you’ll catch the vibrant Festas de Lisboa, featuring a parade of colourful sardine floats.
Portimão is the largest city in the Western Algarve, and its history dates back to the Roman era. The local museum, Museu de Portimão, is well worth a visit to explore the town’s fishing heritage. Traditional Portuguese eateries can be found in the older part of town.
We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
