Voyage Description

Setting sail from Lisbon

You’ll join Santa Maria Manuela in the buzzing city of Lisbon. We’d recommend arriving early! Make the most of the opportunity to hear Fado music, visit historic neighbourhoods like Alfama, the Belem Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Plus, of course, the Maritime Museum is an absolute must.

After being welcomed aboard by the crew, you’ll receive a safety briefing and get to know your fellow sailors over dinner. Then it’s time to set sail, heading out of the city under the Ponte 25 de Abril at sunset!

Along the Way

As you head towards the Madeira archipelago, your journey covers over 500 nautical miles, giving you ample time to connect with the crew and other guests. On this voyage, you’re welcome to take the helm, trim the sails, or assist in navigation. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a complete novice, helping to sail the ship is incredibly satisfying, and we’d recommend getting involved at every opportunity.

The voyage includes a stop at Porto Santo, an island known for its 9-kilometre stretch of golden sands and turquoise waters. Here, you can swim and stretch your legs on the sand before continuing on to Funchal.

Throughout the trip, keep an eye out for wildlife. Dolphins are often sighted in these waters, and occasionally, whales too. The night skies, far from any city lights, are spectacular too.

Porto Santo

Arriving in Funchal

The journey concludes in Funchal, the vibrant capital of Madeira. With its warm, welcoming atmosphere, Funchal invites you to explore if you’re able to stay an extra day. Wander through the city’s bustling Mercado dos Lavradores, where you’ll find fresh produce and Madeira’s renowned black scabbardfish.

For a taste of local history, visit the 15th-century Funchal Cathedral or explore the Museum of the History of Madeira. And if you’re looking to savour local flavours, indulge in bolo do caco (garlic bread) and a glass of Madeira wine. The nearby Monte cable car and botanical gardens are great for panoramic views of the island.

Wind, Waves & Weather

November is in the ‘shoulder season’ for this passage, so expect somewhat changeable conditions. If you’re lucky with a nice high pressure system, you could have sunshine for the whole voyage, but it is more realistic to prepare for a mixture of bright conditions with some rain and squalls. Wind speeds average 15 to 20 knots (force 4 to 5) from the North or Northeast, which is a great sailing breeze, but this can pick up to force 7 when low pressure systems pass. Be aware, too, that the swell can be fairly pronounced from the Northerly trades. Temperatures will average 18–22°C in the day, 13–17°C at night, but it will warm up as you approach the Madeira archipelago, where conditions become drier, sunnier and more stable.

Hands On Holidays

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail. For more on this, see our article ‘What is a Hands-On Sailing Holiday?’

Sailing Style and Life on Board

We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.

A Note on Voyage Descriptions

On a sailing voyage we never guarantee a specific itinerary. Skippers will always be aiming for the best and safest sailing routes given the forecast. They are as keen as you to include all the potential highlights of a voyage, but when it comes to sailing you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description provided is based on what we think is likely to be possible, based on past trips and prior experience, but nothing is guaranteed. As such, the scheduled joining ports, routes, activities and/or destinations may be altered. Due to the complexities of weather systems, this may be at very short notice.

Start & End Port

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a city steeped in maritime history. The Maritime Museum and the Jerónimos Monastery are a nod to Portugal’s illustrious sea voyages. For history buffs, the Alfama district is a labyrinth of narrow streets, capturing Lisbon’s Moorish past.

Fado music often wafts through the air as you navigate the city’s hilly streets. If you find yourself here in June, you’ll catch the vibrant Festas de Lisboa, featuring a parade of colourful sardine floats.

Funchal, Madeira

If Funchal is your leaving port then arriving into Funchal by sea, offers stunning views of the city perched on an ancient volcanic slope. Shadowing the city are impressive mountains covered in laurel bushes and banana trees, a natural park which was nominated a UNESCO Word Heritage site in 1999, Laurissilva of Madeira.

If you are flying in to join your ship then you may get a birds eye view of this volcanic jewel in the Atlantic Ocean, unless the trade wind mists are swirling on the summits.

What to Bring

For any destination north of Cape Verde warm and waterproof clothing is very important, as it can get cold during sailing, especially at night, even in the summer. A waterproof and windproof jacket is recommended to help keep warm and dry. Waterproof rubber soled boots or shoes are also recommended to keep your feet dry and warm. It is a good idea to bring two pairs of shoes in case one gets wet as salt water soaked shoes take a while to dry. Madeira, Portugal and the Azores in summer can get pretty hot and it is easy to get sunburn at sea as the air is clear. The Cape Verde are in a tropical climate so a good sun screen is essential. Please remember that space on board is limited and pack accordingly. Pack comfortable and practical clothing for all weather circumstances, the key is layers!! It is recommended to pack in a soft bag that can be easily stored away as there is no room on board for suitcases. Electricity on board is European 2 pin sockets, please be sure to bring any adaptors you may need.

Passports, Visas and Insurance

If you voyage is sailing in foreign waters, you will require a full passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end of the voyage. You will be responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. We have Third Party Liability Insurance and recommend all those sailing with us to take out relevant travel insurance to cover their voyage.

Medical Conditions and Special Diets

Please inform us in advance of any medical conditions you have and medication which you might need to bring with you. If you have any special dietary requirements it is essential you inform us prior to your voyage. We will make every effort to cater for all diets with prior notice.

Review

We had the most amazing time. The crew were so friendly and helpful, the food was great throughout, and the cabins were really comfortable. We both climbed the rigging as the sun was setting over Porto Santo to round off a brilliant last day with the new friends we met. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Ian & Dayna

I have sailed many times on tall ships, this is by far the best yet.

Terrific crew and ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew and guests were very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. This is a terrifically well run vessel. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operations. Very many thanks.
