Enjoy the breathtaking Devon and Cornwall coastline whilst experiencing a taste of great hospitality and how to sail a beautiful 74ft Brixham Trawler.
Leaving from Brixham, Pilgrim will be going for a romp down the coast Westwards to the land of Poldark and pasties. You will finish your voyage in Falmouth, Cornwall, having sailed along one of the most untouched and dramatic coasts of Britain.
At the start of your journey you will find Pilgrim moored on the Town Pontoon close to where she was originally built by the Uphams Shipyard in 1895. You will be welcomed aboard with refreshments before the usual safety briefings and boat tour to allow you to settle in and find your way around. Once everyone is ready we will set sail and the adventure begins!
As you leave Brixham be sure to look back at the picture postcard fishing port with pretty colour-washed fishermen’s cottages rising up around the old harbour. You will also see other heritage vessels and classic sailing boats as well as fishing trawlers in and around the busy harbour. Pilgrim sets sail around Berry Head. This dramatic limestone headland is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is home to a sea bird colony of guillemots and black legged kittiwakes and of course lots of Kestrels and gulls who also make it their home. We are often accompanied by dolphins or porpoises here, so make sure you are up on deck with your camera to get some great shots of the amazing sea life.
Enjoy the seascape and dramatic coastal scenery with interesting rock formations creating rugged limestone cliffs, sandy bays, secret coves and inlets. Pilgrim will take your past Marys Bay, the dramatic headland of Sharkham Point and then onto the royal port of Dartmouth.
A ‘Day Mark’ built in 1864 on the eastern side of the estuary helps us identity the River Dart. This is often another spot to see the occasional harbour porpoise, common grey seal as well as cormorants, guillemots, gannets and sea gulls. Dependant on the weather this is often our overnight port.
The famous Slapton Sands stretch for 2 miles ahead. In 1944 this was the scene of the infamous Exercise Tiger, a D Day rehearsal that went badly wrong. A combination of an attack by German E-boats and miss timed friendly fire resulted in the loss of 946 men.
Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve sits behind Slapton Sands and is the largest freshwater lake in the South West and home to both native and migrating birds.
Between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge lies Start Point where many historical shipwrecks have been recorded on the reefs and rocks around this dramatic headland. The Start Point lighthouse was built in 1836 to warn off passing ships. If you ever revisit by land, the lighthouse is open to the public with guided tours between Easter and October showing the life of a traditional lighthouse keeper.
Salcombe and its beautiful harbour set in a stunning natural environment designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is next. It has become a very popular weekend destination for sailors and visitors alike looking to get away from it all! Despite becoming a vibrant, busy little town, Salcombe still manages to retain its unique Devon charm!
Passing Plymouth Sound, a sweeping natural harbour, Pilgrim sails you into Cornish waters with a myriad of tranquil anchorages and breathtaking coastline.
You might stop in Cawsand, anchor off Looe Island or dive into Fowey or Charlestown. Charlestown harbour is famed for its starring role in the BBC dramatisation of Poldark and is now a popular destination for tourists and sailors!
Leaving Pilgrim and your new found friends will be hard! To get you back home from Falmouth there is an excellent national rail and transport links to the rest of the UK for your homeward journey – or you may decide to stay on for a few days to explore this wonderful county further!
This is the part of your sailing trip that unfortunately we unable to control! As a result we cannot guarantee that all destinations/experiences referred to in this description will be in your itinerary exactly as stated, however we will always do our up most to deliver a great experience.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office on 01872 58 00 22 and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.

We now have several vessels that use Falmouth as a joining or leaving port. As every vessel is different, and we do not have our own pontoon there, all joining instructions are slightly different. Any changes will be communicated to you before your voyage start date.
This is a list of the likely joining locations, but sometimes the ship can also be at anchor. Read the vessel’s joining instructions carefully for full details.
Port Pendennis is the small marina behind the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the nearest rail station is ‘Falmouth Town’ (3 mins walk). The Maritime Museum has a big tower like a lighthouse so aim for that and at the entrance, turn right and walk down the side of the museum. The gate to the marina is behind the museum building.
Custom House Quay is a stone quay enclosing a small wet dock in the Centre of Falmouth Town. It is used for some of the foot ferries to St Mawes in the peak summer. Only 5 minutes walk from Falmouth Town Station if you head towards the town centre. Situated at the Maritime Museum end of the high street and has its own short stay car park between Trago Mills Store and the Chain Locker Pub if you are driving and want to drop your bags first.
Falmouth Visitors Yacht Haven is about 100 yards beyond Custom House Quay but if walking from the rail station towards town it is best if you walk accross Custom House Quay short term car park and nip through the alley tunnel through the Chain Locker Pub. The yacht haven is a small marina only yards from Falmouth main shopping street (Arwenack St), tucked away down the bottom of Quay Street.

For Pilgrim, your boat will be berthed on Brixham Town Pontoon, on the east side of Brixham Harbour, opposite The Prince William Pub. Your joining times can be found on your confirmation email.

Wow, what can I say about my first trip on the beautiful Pilgrim with Classic Sailing? It was amazing! I am still smiling about the utterly brilliant weekend. I booked this trip as a bit of an escape from the day to day normal life on the land and it was well worth it. I returned home more relaxed, a little sunburnt, but wanting to just jump straight back on board! I t was great fun being allowed to be involved in raising the sails and learning a bit of history about the vessel. If you hare thinking about booking a voyage, be it a day trip, weekend or longer... do it! I could not recommend it more highly and as a single traveller I also felt at ease and safe while on the whole voyage.
