Anyone keen to explore the beautiful coasts of Cornwall and Brittany, with time to explore.
New and experienced sailors who’d love the challenge of two Channel crossings, helping Phoenix’s professional crew to get the most out of this stunning tall ship.
Those who are after a proper sailing adventure, with great variety, who only have a week to spare.
You’ll join Phoenix in Falmouth and have an evening to settle in, getting to know your fellow sailors over dinner and enjoying your first cosy night on board. The following morning you’ll set sail East up the Cornish Coast for the picturesque fishing town of Mevagissey. Anchoring off, there’s plenty to explore ashore, as Mevagissey celebrates its annual Feast Week. Live music, great food, local cider and a sense of celebration. A fantastic way to round off your first day’s sailing.
Everything you learned on your first day of coasting will come in handy as Phoenix weighs anchor and sets a course across the English Channel to Brittany. Sailing out of sight of land is a great experience, and although the French coast will appear before too long, it reminds you that this is indeed an epic seafaring adventure in miniature!
On arrival in Brittany, you’ll explore the rugged coastline under sail, finding the most picturesque anchorages and stopovers. Time to explore ashore, too, and immerse yourself in the local culture. The Bretons love traditional seafaring, and Phoenix will be greeted with waves and smiles wherever she goes.
A North-bound Channel crossing rounds off your week on board. Arriving back into Falmouth with scenic views of Pendennis Castle and St Anthony’s Lighthouse, you’ll be amazed how much you’ve learned in 7 days. A final celebratory dinner on board with the crew is the perfect chance to relive your adventure among new friends. Stepping ashore the next morning you may feel the slight wobble of land-sickness. This will fade, but the memories won’t.
Any Channel crossing has the potential to be choppy but Phoenix is a heavy wooden ship and will keep you safe and sound. Along the North Brittany and Channel Isles coasts the tides are fast and can create confused seas. Once around the corner of the North Brittany coast the land creates some shelter from Atlantic swell.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. See the vessel tab above which explains all about the ‘sailing style’ and what to expect in terms of hands on participation. There is a lot of information about day to day life, the ships facilities and accommodation on the vessel pages.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office on 01872 58 00 22 and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.

We now have several vessels that use Falmouth as a joining or leaving port. As every vessel is different, and we do not have our own pontoon there, all joining instructions are slightly different. Any changes will be communicated to you before your voyage start date.
This is a list of the likely joining locations, but sometimes the ship can also be at anchor. Read the vessel’s joining instructions carefully for full details.
Port Pendennis is the small marina behind the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the nearest rail station is ‘Falmouth Town’ (3 mins walk). The Maritime Museum has a big tower like a lighthouse so aim for that and at the entrance, turn right and walk down the side of the museum. The gate to the marina is behind the museum building.
Custom House Quay is a stone quay enclosing a small wet dock in the Centre of Falmouth Town. It is used for some of the foot ferries to St Mawes in the peak summer. Only 5 minutes walk from Falmouth Town Station if you head towards the town centre. Situated at the Maritime Museum end of the high street and has its own short stay car park between Trago Mills Store and the Chain Locker Pub if you are driving and want to drop your bags first.
Falmouth Visitors Yacht Haven is about 100 yards beyond Custom House Quay but if walking from the rail station towards town it is best if you walk accross Custom House Quay short term car park and nip through the alley tunnel through the Chain Locker Pub. The yacht haven is a small marina only yards from Falmouth main shopping street (Arwenack St), tucked away down the bottom of Quay Street.
Please limit yourself to one soft bag or rucksack as there is limited storage space on board. No hard suitcases please!
Phoenix does not provide waterproof jacket and trousers to guest sailors, so please bring a properly waterproof jacket and trousers on all voyages. These don't have to be expensive sailing oilskins, walking and cycling waterproofs are usually adequate and much lighter to pack, so there really is no need to buy a coastal sailing jacket (unless you really want an excuse to invest in your future sailing). If you need any advice, or lack of a jacket is preventing you participating, contact Classic Sailing.
A truly memorable experience on an iconic tall ship. The crew were outstanding - welcoming, cheerful and thoroughly professional. A novice sailor, I nonetheless found myself accepted and encouraged to participate fully in sailing the ship from hauling on the sheets to going aloft. I hope I'm fortunate enough to sail with them again.
Peter
Good accommodation, professional and helpful crew, very good food!
