Klevia was built in Esbjerg, Denmark in 1936 for fishing the North Sea. The hull was brought to Bangor, Wales by Scott Metcalf of Waterfront Marine who with his family and team lovingly restored the ship and added a traditional gaff ketch rig.
In 2022 Klevia is sailing from Penzance for eco transport pioneers New Dawn Traders, taking a ton of cargo along for the ride on most of her voyages. Whilst a fairly nominal quantity of cargo, New Dawn Traders are keen to highlight the issues with the current UK cargo coding system for sailing boats, and Klevia is to become the poster girl for their project to improve this, and help enable sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes to carry cargo under the UK flag.
Embark: 10am on Monday 25th July, Penzance
Disembark: 3pm on Friday 29th July, Penzance
Join ‘Klevia’ in Penzance for a round trip to the Scilly Isles: exploring by sail allows access to some of the most beautiful and inaccessible places.
Klevia will also be carrying a small amount of cargo to the islands.
Klevia can take up to 6 guests, in four single bunks and one double bunk. Please note that accommodation spaces are mixed gender.
On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to make stopovers in beautiful locations but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her.
There is no guarantee that Klevia will make it to the Isles of Scilly, but if it’s not possible given the weather there are a host of other stunning places to explore along the Cornish Coast, so you can be sure that you’ll have fun whatever the weather.
Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.
Every customer sailing with us will need to fill in basic medical questions on their booking application. If you are not sure if your current level of fitness and agility are up to a voyage, then please ring the Classic Sailing Office on 01326 53 1234 and we can chat through your concerns and possibly find options that might suit you better.

Penzance harbour is the home port of the Car and Passenger Ferry to the Scillies. There is only one ferry called the Scillionian – a very distinctive white vessel that moors up on the seaward Pier to the Penzance Wet Dock. If the ferry is in port you can usually see it accross the harbour from the Penzance Railway Station car park.
The outer harbour is tidal and dries out to mud so the wet dock is the place that Classic Sailing vessels will use to start or end your voyage, so if you head for the Penzance – Scilly Ferry on foot or follow the road signs for the Scillionian Ferry you will find the Wet Dock. Next door is the famous Penzance Swimming Lido with bright blue flags.
The Penzance Wet Dock has a lock gate that can only be entered 1.5 hrs before or after high water, and the entrance is exposed to Southerly or SE gales, so it is possible the skipper of your vessel may have to dock in the nearby fishing port of Newlyn.
