Noorderlicht

Noorderlicht and her distinctive red hull have been sailing around Svalbard and Northern Norway since 1994.
They have acquired a huge knowledge of the Arctic, its wildlife and the best places and times to see nature in all its glory.
The ship’s shallow draft allows Noorderlicht to enter many secluded coves and anchorages that bigger vessels are unable to get too. Using her sails as much as possible means you are experiencing a really green way of traveling in harmony with the environment.
You are encouraged to join in the sailing and learn as much as you like about sailing a traditional sailing ship.
History
The name ‘Noorderlicht’ means North Light because after she was built in 1910 as a three-masted schooner but she actually served as a light-vessel in the Baltic for many years. In 1991 new owners purchased the hull and re-rigged and refitted her thoroughly, under the rules of “Register Holland”, one of the highest standards in the world.

Perfect Refit
‘Noorderlicht’ now has a well-balanced two-masted schooner rig and is capable of sailing the seven seas. She is a perfect small expedition ship with only 20 guests in 10 twin cabins and the views from her deck under sail or motor are great vantage points.

What Noorderlicht does best.

What Noorderlicht does best.

Noorderlicht excels at showing you the arctic, its nature on and in the sea and ashore. She has built up a wonderful reputation for knowing all the best places and enabling you to experience the Arctic and its wildlife at first hand with expeditions ashore and very knowledgeable guides.

Zodiacs

The 2 inflatable rubber crafts (zodiacs) enable landing and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas.

Captains and Crew

The qualified captains have a great experience of Svalbard and Northern Norway. Together with the rest of the crew, they will do everything possible to ensure that you have a wonderful and unforgettable journey.

Flexibility is the key for expedition voyages and this is only achievable if there is the depth of knowledge to choose the best options for the current weather, wind and ice conditions, Noorderlicht has this.

Daily updates

Every day that hikes are planned (weather and ice permitting),  the ambition will be to view and study the wildlife, geography, flora and fauna and the history of the area. It is also possible to have documentaries or lectures given onboard to expand your knowledge about the area in which you are sailing.

On a daily basis the Captain, crew or guides will brief you on the progress of the trip, the weather conditions and possibilities for later days. Questions will be answered and plans kept flexible to provide the best possible expedition for you and other guests.
